The purpose of Sound Healing (Therapy) is to carry the listener/participant from a state of disharmony back to a balanced state. Who doesn’t like a good melody?
How? When a steady pitch is played, the brain will attune to and attempt to synchronize with it- this is called entrainment. The brain shifts from normal consciousness, beta, to a relaxed awareness, alpha. Some people respond even deeper by going into a meditative state, theta and then a healing sleep, delta. The change in brain waves is accomplished by chanting, playing a sequence of notes, or a particular pitch or intervals. The purpose is to relax the mind, increase receptivity and recalibrate the system to an optimal ‘hum’, helping us to heal faster and be more effective in our work. A relaxed mind is a creative and efficient mind; therefore happier.
What does this look like? When pairs of tuning forks are placed on specific acupuncture points, negative energy is moved or dispersed, and positive resources strengthened. It works just like Acupuncture but without the needles- tuning forks are noninvasive and they sound cool. The difference is you are dressed, seated in a chair while forks are placed on extremities. If you feel the need to converse you may. It is all part of the healing. One person stated she was so relaxed after she felt like she had had a massage.
Another method is to engage the sound of gongs, chimes and healing bowls while seated in the center of the room; the instruments surround you as sound waves pass through you. Your own private concert; a bath of sound. I have yet to encounter anyone who did not like the resonance of the bowls placed on the body and deeply feel the vibration- very relaxing while implementing change.
Tuning Forks and Chinese Medicine: A case report
Jane – A number of years ago a woman came to me for coping with anxiety. She also suffered from diverticulitis; when she didn’t watch her diet she had an attack. She was not always compliant with self-care and use of needed antibiotics when she had a flare-up. This was her situation when Jane arrived for her appointment- she had been in bed for three days in writhing pain. After going over what she knew she needed to do, I suggested a Sound Healing treatment using pairs of tuning forks on various meridian points. While I worked on the extremities to release stuck energy, the four gates, extraordinary vessels, and increase circulation of Qi, I asked her to take a pair of forks around the Hara- the points around the navel.
After about 20 minutes, she was much more relaxed, with significantly reduced pain. Jane reported in the next session she had taken the antibiotics when she got home, napped and by evening she was doing heavy gardening. In the ensuing months, her self-care improved consistently without prompting; no flare- ups.
The Celestial Tuneup
The Celestial Tuneup is a wellness approach to sound healing designed to unblock energy and bring you back to the Optimal Hum. The result is relaxing, rejuvenating and the mind is cleared of clutter. This is based in Ancient and Traditional Chinese medicine. In other words- you’ll get tuning forks, Himalayan Healing Bowls, Gongs and a lovely lullaby. You will experience the power of voice as a healing instrument. I often include imagery; all sessions are individualized.
After engaging in the Past Life Forgiveness, during which a significant amount of work was accomplished, a woman asked for a Celestial Tune-up. Upon completion, she remarked, “I feel very relaxed, like I’ve had a massage.”
I encourage people to close a session with a tune-up because it helps integrate and solidify the therapy we accomplished. As one woman stated, ‘I love closing with the Tuning forks, very relaxing, but the best part is when you use your voice. It is amazing what comes out of you…I feel like I have been given a healing.” Click Here to view the healing sounds.
